OKEHAMPTON'S community arts project is searching for people who are a hit on the dance floor — the only stipulation is you have to be male.

With a predominance of females in the dance company 'NRG', Fusion Youth Arts is keen to get some of that 'hidden' male talent to the fore.

Community youth worker Alan King is sure there are plenty of young men out there who have talent.

'At the Okehampton Arts Festival this year we hope to have a group of male dancers called RJC coming from Manchester who are very physical and their routines rely very much on muscular strength,' he said.

'The aim is to appeal to that macho image that young men have of themselves.'

Fusion received some funding from West Devon Borough Council last year to set up a male dance group and form links between Okehampton gospel choir 'Soul Attitude' with a choir in London.

The problem has been getting a tutor who can really encourage and inspire young men from the age of 13 to early 20s to join a dance group.

Mr King thinks he may have found someone appropriate who has been running successful dance workshops in the Ivybridge and Ashburton area.

'There are one or two boys in the NRG dance company but when it is predominantly girls the boys feel pressured and segregated,' he added.

'A lot of young men have no problem dancing in nightclubs — what we want to do is transfer that into a performance.'

The youth worker said he only needed six to eight people to come forward to get things going.
