A GIRLS' group from Tavistock's youth café is appealing for donations of Christmas decorations to send to a school in Zambia.

The girls, aged 12 to 18, are asking West Devon residents to rummage through their decorations in order to help make a difference to many schoolchildren in Zambia this Christmas.

The group is currently sponsoring a young girl in Zambia to go to school for a year with the money they raised at Parklife this year, in the youth café tent.

But instead of the usual gifts the group sends to the schoolchildren, the school's headteacher has appealed for them to think again.

Group member Yasmine Rich, 14, from Tavistock College, said: 'The headteacher at the school in Zambia has said that he does not want people to send individual presents to the pupils but if we wish to, we can send Christmas decorations and party things so that they can have a Christmas party at the school.

'We are currently trying to raise money to send decorations, stationery and sweets as this will give all the children a chance to get involved with Christmas.'

Anyone who has decorations to spare or would like to donate stationery or sweets should contact the youth café on 01822 612851 or email [email protected]">[email protected] by the end of October.

The group has expressed thanks to Mainly Stationery, Alan Dolan and Shambles for donating stationery.
