AN appeal was this week issued to apple tree owners in West Devon to donate their unwanted or surplus apples, to be used in a new scheme to benefit schoolchildren in the area.

The scheme is being piloted by Tavistock Farmers? Market, which will sell the donated apples and use the profits to buy new, local variety apple trees to be given to West Devon primary schools.

John Dixon, a member of the Farmers? Market Association, said: ?Now that the leaves have started to fall, we cannot help but notice the large numbers of apples remaining unpicked in people?s gardens and small orchards.

?This new scheme will make these apples available to those who want to buy them ? and at the same time, provide new trees for primary schools so that future generations of children can enjoy an apple as a healthy snack at break time.?

The farmers? market is looking for any late variety apples still on the trees and in good condition ? volunteers will pick them this weekend and they will be sold at the market in Tavistock on November 22. Anyone who can help the scheme should call 01822 610676 before 5pm tomorrow (Friday).
