THERE will be a chance to meet soldiers and learn about today's armed forces at the 2009 Devon Royal British Legion' biennial county rally being held alongside the fifth annual Military Heritage Weekend at Okehampton Battle Camp on Saturday and Sunday September 12 and 13.
The rally itself is on September 13 while the Heritage Weekend will take place on both days.
The aim of the Heritage Weekend, an initiative of the Okehampton Camp Commandant, Lt Col Tony Clark, is to give an opportunity to the public to understand the importance of Dartmoor as a training area. It will also show how the military look after the natural environment of the moor.
This year's rally is open to everyone; an opportunity for old comrades to meet and reminisce as well as being an enjoyable day out for the whole family. The highlight of the day will be a parade of Legion and Regimental Association Standards and those of the Armed Forces Cadet and youth groups, with the Salamanca Band of The Rifles. Starting at 10 am on both days, visitors will be able to see a large variety of displays including vintage and present military vehicles, equipment and military models.
For children, there is the rifle range, laser battles, archery, obstacle course and initiative tests. The NAAFI canteen will provide refreshments and arena displays take place on both days. The rally at 2pm on Sunday will feature a light gun display by the Royal Artillery, unarmed combat from the Royal Marines, free-fall parachutists of the RN and RM Parachute Display Team, and a performance by the Barnstaple Town Majorettes.
The event runs from 10am to 5pm on Saturday and 10am until 4pm on Sunday. Entrance is free and there will be free car parking.
