THE Royal British Legion of Devon will hold its 2010 Festival of Remembrance at the Princess Theatre, Torquay, on Remembrance Day, Thursday, November 11, at 7pm.
In addition to entertainment, this annual tribute to Britain's Armed Forces will feature the Britannia Royal Naval College Volunteer Band, Dartmouth, and the traditional muster of Standards of Devon's Royal British Legion and Service Associations, as well as representatives of the serving Armed Forces, cadet forces, youth groups, and emergency services.
It will end with a short Service of Remembrance, including 'the two minutes' silence'.
A special bus/coach has been arranged to leave Fore Street, Okehampton, at 5pm on November 11 to take those attending the festival.
Those wishing to take advantage of this are asked to call the Okehampton Social Club of the RBL on 01837 53310 or Peter Williams on 01837 840757.
Peter, the secretary of Okehampton RBL and a spokesman for Devon RBL, said: 'Once again, a high price has been paid by members of Britain's Armed Forces during the past year in Afghanistan.
'Since 2002, 332 have been killed and hundreds wounded, many severely. Most especially, many of these gallant veterans, who have been left scarred both physically and mentally, will need the support of the Royal British Legion for years to come.
'Today's Poppy Appeal is as relevant today as at any time in the past 89 years. It is only fitting, therefore, that the citizens of Devon have the opportunity to show their support for the servicemen and women, past and present, doing their duty on behalf of the nation.'
The festival theme is the 150th anniversary of the formation of the Cadet movement. In addition to the high profile of the cadet forces, the guest speaker is a serving member of the Royal Marines, whose association with the military goes back to his membership of the Somerset Army Cadet Force.
Warrant Officer class one Matthew Tomlinson is the holder of both the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross and the Military Cross, and his keynote speech should be an inspiration to everyone, young and old. It is hoped that cadets, parents and friends will attend the festival.
Tickets cost £8 from Princess Theatre, Torquay; call 01803 380842. Please note that tickets can be ordered from the theatre ticket office and payment should be by cheque to avoid any extra charges.
