AN Okehampton bakery has been handed the mammoth task of producing almost 300 pasties for a special feast.
W T Endacott?s Bakery will produce the tasty treats for a group of disabled youngsters who are undertaking a gruelling expedition as part of the Dartmoor Ten Tors Expedition 2004.
The Jubilee Challenge sees the youngsters, many in wheelchairs, trek up to 15 miles in groups or individually along routes they have devised themselves.
Each of the youngsters will be accompanied by a cadet from Exeter University Officers Training Corps and all treks will start from Okehampton Army Camp which is the Jubilee Challenge base.
Bakery director Michael Finucane said: ?We supplied pasties to Ten Tors about 20 years ago.
?It?s marvellous to be doing so again ? and that the Army is supporting the local
community in this way.?
Army caterers are keen to uphold the tradition of identifying local produce for troops on the ground ? and events such as Ten Tors are no exception.
Warrant officer Geordie Chrisp, Food Services Warrant Officer at Wyvern Barracks, Exeter, said: ?Here in Devon, local meat, fish ? and pasties ? are sourced for events and functions.
?Ten Tors provides demonstrable proof of our involvement in, and support to, regional food interests.?
