A COLOURFUL 'River of Colour' produced by Tavistock artist Maggie Squire was pinned to the town hall this week.

The work of art, made entirely of 10,000 recycled plastic bags,

includes 2,000 figures made by Maggie and hundreds of willing volunteers in the area. It also attracted a Year of the Artist grant from Southwest Arts.

Maggie said the idea was to include as many people as possible.

She said: 'I've had a brilliant response — it's just snowballed. More and more people were actually coming in and saying "Could I do some?".'

Maggie said people of all ages had a go at making the little figures which were put up on the town hall by council employees this week.

'Also the response for the bags has been stunning, which I like because it involves others that might not feel they want to make a figure but it still involves them in the process,' said Maggie.

'I'm really pleased with it, the workmen have made a brilliant job.

'I've had lots of people who are really interested and curious — they couldn't believe it was made out of plastic bags.

'The best bit is that I've had loads of people who've come down really excited to see their own work up there.'

The River of Colour project is part of the Nine Days of Art open studio event in which 180 artists throughout the Dartmoor area are opening their doors to the public between September 16 and 24.
