ST John Ambulance's Okehampton unit is providing first aid cover and demonstrating life saving skills at the Safety on Dartmoor Day, on Sunday, June 22. Volunteers from the nation's leading first aid charity will be at the National Trust-owned Lydford Gorge, alongside members of the emergency services, for the third year running. 'The 2013 event was a great success so we are really looking forward to doing it again this year,' said SJA unit manager, Lee Duckworth. 'We will be doing demonstrations on resuscitation and other first aid skills, so visitors of all ages can learn how to be the difference between a life lost and a life saved and, hopefully, go on to take some further training, or maybe even volunteer with St John Ambulance.' The charity's Okehampton group provides essential first aid cover for many events on Dartmoor and in the surrounding area — particularly during the summer — including agricultural shows, point-to-points, music festivals and concerts. They have also put their first aid skills to good use at events outside Devon, including the London Marathon. The Safety on Dartmoor Day is at Lydford Gorge between 10am and 5pm. Please note that normal National Trust admission charges apply. There will be fire engines, police cars and ambulances to explore and people can watch police dog demonstrations and — emergencies permitting — helicopters from the emergency services will also put in appearances.
