A loving daughter has completed her wish list series of challenges to raise money for the charity supporting people with the illness which led to her mum's early death.
Pippa Marshall set herself 70 creative and physical challenges over the past three years, starting on what would have been her mum’s seventieth birthday in 2023.
She is raising money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society (MS Society) in memory of her mum who passed away aged 63 in 2016, having lived with the degenerative condition for a long time.
Many of the challenges have emotional significance, linked to her mum Carol, whether it’s places she visited or things she liked.
Pippa says all the challenges celebrate her mother’s life and honour her resilience, lack of self-pity or complaining, despite the slow, but non-stop deterioration of her condition which eventually left her almost immobile.
Pip, from near Bridestowe, has raised more than £3,600 for the MS Society and completed activities, including hang gliding, volunteering as a surf mentor with youngsters, swimming 2.5km and around St Michael's Mount, and the length of the River Camel, walking 20km in London, writing to the King, using her mum’s recipes for baking competitions.
Her final challenge was cycling Wadebridge to Dunmere and back along the Camel Trail: “Both Mum and I grew up on the banks of the Camel so it was a fitting end.
“I did these challenges because I wanted to remind myself of whom I was. Because of my caring responsibilities I neglected and forgotten my inner person. These challenges reminded me of all her likes and dislikes and what mattered to her. I now also have a renewed connection with her.
“Because of her illness I don't have a massive bank of happy memories from early childhood. From mid teens until she passed away there weren’t lots of happy memories, making made grieving hard.
“These challenges have given me those memories and I know it sounds weird because mum wasn't here. Now I've got an abundant amount of wonderful memories of things I've done, places I've been and people I've met.
“I did these challenges in memory of Mum and to get her name out there and obviously to raise money and awareness for multiple sclerosis so that's been wonderful.
“It’s been a wonderful reminder of who I am as well and of connecting to Mum, so I feel the world is full of possibilities again which is lovely.”
Pippa said it was very tough to share her Mum's experience of MS, through her eyes: “I've always been private and got on with life, like Mum. I worried people thought this was all about me, not mum. I’m helping people understand the life-changing impact of MS diagnosis.
“I also stress this was Mum's story and people should not expect it to be the same for others. Also, there wasn’t much known about MS in the 70s. My motivation is to raise money in Mum's name knowing it will help other sufferers and their families.”
