Devon and Cornwall and League Wessex 16 Tavistock 25 IN perfect playing conditions both sides attempted to play open flowing rugby. Tavistock were always in front and despite the best efforts of a determined Wessex side were never in danger of being overhauled after taking the lead courtesy of a Gareth Lovell penalty goal after a quarter of an hour, when Wessex were penalised at a ruck. Tavistock then extended their lead when after taking a scrum against the head they moved the ball left and worked space for full back Andy Wright to score in the corner. Gareth Lovell duly converted. Wessex struck back with a speculative drop goal from fly half Lee Thorp to reduce the arrears to 10 - 3. Tavistock then surged back into the attack and some clever handling by centre Lee Webber provided a scoring pass for winger David Goodspeed whose running line saw him scythe through the Wessex defence. Tavistock extended their lead as the half drew to its conclusion with a second Gareth Lovell penalty. The start of the second half saw Wessex get back into the game with a try from Simon Lewry. Wessex then got closer with a try from Dean Meldon after Tavistock had Mike Deebner sent to the sin bin. Tavistock then closed out the game with a try from debutant wing Mark Hennesay which was converted by Lovell. l Tavistock resume Cornwall and Devon league action on November 24 when they entertain Cullompton at Sandy Park, kick off 2.30pm.
