A BRIDESTOWE man has warned people to be on the lookout for a scam letter informing the recipient that they have won millions on a European Lottery. Rex Haythornthwaite received the letter, which appears to have originated from Madrid, last week. The letter is headed ??uromillones Lotería International? and purports to be an ?Award notification, final notice?. The letter goes on to say that the recipient drew the lucky numbers in a recent Euromillones Sweepstake Lottery International Program and is one of 17 international winners who have won a payout of $615, 810. The letter asks the ?winner? to fill out their bank account details on a payment processing form and send the completed form by fax so that the ?prize? could be paid directly into the account. The letter set a deadline for the prize to be claimed of October 4. The letter claims that ?due to a mix up of some numbers and names, we ask you to keep this award strictly from public notice until your claim has been processed and your money remitted to your account.? Mr Haythornthwaite said he was suspicious when he received the letter: ?It is two years since I went to Spain and I couldn?t remember buying any lottery ticket.? He conducted an internet search and found a letter almost identical to the one he received reproduced on a website warning of variations upon European lottery hoax mail. He also contacted Devon Trading Standards who confirmed they were aware of the letter, and warned consumers not to respond to it.
