MEAVY and Yelverton pre-school has received a cash boost to help make the most out of its outside learning project.

The pre-school received a £6,500 'Awards for All' grant from the Big Lottery Fund for their project FACE (Farming, Activity, Community and Environment).

The project aims to take the classroom outside, using the knowledge of local people to help them to learn about landscape, wildlife, farming and people. The children will be going on farm visits to see how the countryside around them is managed and where their food comes from.

The children have already visited the 'Lambing Live' event at Greenwell Farm to see the beginning of the life cycle, and the pre-school has planned visits to a dairy farm in a few weeks to see cows being milked. Alongside this will be pony parties at the pre-school, nature walks and woodland play with forest school, just to name a few.

When back in the classroom, they will be talking about and using some of the things they have found on their adventures — wool from sheep for felt-making, milk from the cows for snack time and cooking and twigs and leaves for artwork to put up on the wall at home.

The lambs have even come to visit the children at the pre-school.

The pre-school will also be asking national park rangers and local bird watchers to come and talk to the children about wildlife.
