THERE has been good news for bowlers in Tavistock this week, with the news that a £50,000 lottery award has rolled their way.

Members of Tavistock Sir Francis Drake Bowling Club are delighted after securing monies from the Olympic legacy funding from Sport England's Inspired Facilities Fund.

The funding will go towards the construction of an extension to its existing clubhouse.

The extension will provide facilities for all year use, allowing the town's short mat players to transfer their activities to the club including their league matches and tournament. The club will also be able to provide a skittles alley and darts as well as continuing its bowls coaching with students from the Tavistock College.

The aim is to provide a multi sports and social events facility for all age groups in the locality.

Club chairman Sue Silcox told the Times: 'We are delighted to have secured this award, which means we can enlarge and upgrade the quality of the club premises, to include more sporting activities and social events for the Tavistock community.'

The awards were part of £2.4- million National Lottery funding going to 45 sports groups across the South West. The investments improve local facilities, create new venues for grassroots sport and in some cases allow local clubs to buy the facilities they use.

The Sport England grants was also good for two other sporting projects in West Devon.

Hatherleigh Town Council has been awarded £50,000 to provide a concrete skate area in a free form design at Island Park.

The Okehampton Squash Racquet Club has been awarded £50,000 to refurbish their facilities by insulating its four single block walls and ceiling and replacing the existing hot water boiler in changing rooms.

In Cornwall, Launceston Cricket Club was also a recipient with £50,000 from the sporting legacy fund. The money will be spent on two additional changing rooms an enlarged kitchen and enlarged social area. The club is applying for grants to make up the shortfall of the build estimate.
