OKEHAMPTON Mencap Society is celebrating after scooping £2,369 from the National Lottery's Award for All programme.

The grant will allow the group to purchase a lap-top computer, printer andsoftware for use with adults with learning disabilities at The Leaze Day Centre in Okehampton.

Because the laptop is portable it will also be taken to homes of parents and carers to demonstrate software available for home use.

The computer will be internet-accessible allowing research into conditions associated with learning disabilities.

Group spokesperson Chrissy Bray, who is also secretary of the Mencap Society, said: 'We are thrilled to get this award. For a group like ours this is a large sum of money.

'It will allow the opportunity for a great many people to use modern technology and to become informed and educated in a wide variety of subjects.'
