A CHEQUE for more than a thousand pounds was donated to a national cancer charity recently thanks to the efforts of a Tavistock-based naval officer and young trainees based at HMS Raleigh.

Warrant Officer Peter Hooson, along with colleagues Chief Petty Officer Reggie Rugg and Petty Officer Helen Finch and the trainees, raised £1,200 through payment of 'fines' to recover lost property.

The money has been donated to South Devon and East Cornwall CLIC (Cancer and Leukaemia in Childhood) who will use it to fund homecare nursing services and the home from home accommodation near Derriford Hospital.

Warrant Officer Hooson said: 'This is a record amount raised by the division and we are all impressed by the trainees' generosity.'

Warrant Officer Hooson joined the Royal Navy in 1971 and was awarded the MBE in 1997 for his outstanding contribution and dedication in raising money for service charities.

He lives in Tavistock with his wife, Jill, and their three children.
