WORKING groups have been set up to explore Okehampton's needs for the future at part of the Market and Coastal Towns Initiative (MCTI).

Four groups will be looking into the environment, economy, community and transport, following a public meeting at the Ockment Centre recently.

Spokesperson for MCTI in Okehampton Marilyn Tucker said information collated at a community day last November, plus reports which had already been done, would be used to get a snapshot of the way things were at present and the gaps that needed to be filled.

'The process at the moment is to come up with a community plan that will last the town for the next 10 to 20 years,' she said. 'We are hoping to pull everything together so we have a first draft of the plan for consultation in the autumn.'

Local employers are currently being sought to get involved in the consultation process as one of the most important aspects for Okehampton in the future is the creation of new jobs.

The community plan, which will highlight a list of projects to regenerate the town, is expected to attract funding from various pots and up to £1-million has been earmarked for Okehampton from the South West Regional Development Agency.

Anyone interested in putting forward ideas can contact 01837 55775 or go along to the next meeting of the MCTI Okehampton Locality Group at The Ockment Centre on May 29 at 5.30pm.
