THE last Hatherleigh carnival of this millennium should go out in style with a committee full of enthusiasm and bolstered by a number of new members.

With a long hot summer between now and November this year's carnival may seem far away — but the eager committee is already seeking entries for the post of carnival queen.

Press officer Louise Dilling said entries must be female, aged 12 or over by carnival day on November 13, and must live in the parish of Hatherleigh, Meeth or Highampton.

'They also have to be willing to sell draw tickets in aid of carnival funds. The entrant who sells the most tickets will become the 1999 carnival queen,' said Ms Dilling.

'She will receive 10 per cent of all ticket sales over £100 — and a minimum grant of £85.'

Anyone interested should call Mandy Wonnacott on (01837) 810678.

Alma Knight is organising another skittle tournament for tar barrel funds.

It is on April 17 at Highampton Village Hall with teams of six — to include two ladies — must enter by Thursday, April 15 by calling (01837) 810435.

There will be trophies for the winning team and highest scoring singles.
