A WOMAN who bought a bible more than a century old from a charity shop is now hoping to return the book to descendants of its original owner.

Sandy Thom from Kingsbridge bought the leather-bound 120 year-old bible from a charity shop in Ivybridge.

The name and address of Winnie Carter, 48 Brook Street, Tavistock was written inside, along with the inscription: 'Dear Winnie, with much love from Connie. Best wishes for a happy birthday. August 22, 1890.'

Mrs Thom is keen for any direct descendants of Winnie Carter to come forward, so that the bible can be given back to the family.

She said: 'It has wondered away from Tavistock a bit.

'I would love it to go back to the family, but if not I shall be giving it to Tavistock Parish Church.

'It would be nice for the bible to stay in the area.'

Any descendants of Winnie Carter can contact Mrs Thom on 01548 852553.
