A SOUTH Zeal artist has been chosen to have her work shown at a special exhibition for the over-60s. Jennifer Brotherton will have her work exhibited in the EAC Over 60s Art Awards at the Mall Galleries in London next month. The competition was created to celebrate and promote the talents of amateur artists over 60, with approximately 80 works selected from around a thousand entries from all over the country. Mrs Brotherton, 67, said she was delighted to have her work chosen for the exhibition, which she said she first heard about through BBC Radio Devon. Mrs Brotherton, a former teacher at Okehampton College, took up her long-standing interest in painting more seriously after retiring seven years ago. Mrs Brotherton, who specialises in life drawing, said she wasn?t sure about the idea of dividing artist?s work by age, but said older artists had one major advantage over the young: ?The thing about the over-60s is you have got the time, which is something I never had before,? she said. This is only the second time the artist has had her work exhibited, last year she had a picture in the South West Academy of Fine Arts exhibition in Exeter. Sponsored by the Elderly Accommodation Council, these awards seek outstanding talent over a diverse range of painted themes. Subject matter can range from the more traditional landscape to contemporary, abstract and figurative work. The exhibition will run from July 12-16, and on July 13, 14, 15, free art workshops and demonstrations will be taking place at the galleries for visitors to take part in.
