WHAT a good turnout by members of the public, and local riders, for the Okehampton Boxing Day Meet. Fore Street was crowded from end to end. Does anyone know what happened to the police? I spent the morning listening to tales of incidents where the police have not attended.
I thought that we had paid that diabolical increase in council tax so that we should be able to see an officer on the street now and then. Everybody was well behaved, especially the hounds, apart from a few motorists who seemed to think they have a right to crowd horses and reverse into them.
In a few weeks we shall hear that annual orchestrated bleat: ?We have to increase council tax if you want to see more policemen on duty.? When will our councillors find the courage to stand up for their constituents who are being treated with such contempt and benign neglect?
Perhaps it is time that local councillors had to experience unemployment and living on a pension before they even qualify for the task of calculating taxes that fewer and fewer can afford to pay. What?s the point of Working Tax and Pension Credits when there are so many predators with a legal right to snatch it back twice over?
