A GUNNISLAKE man has been awarded a special prize after undertaking a marathon trek from John O' Groats to Land's End — and back again.

Richard Jeynes completed the 39-hour journey in his D-registered Ford Capri last summer with his wife Nicky, raising over £1,200 for the RNLI's 'Fuel the Lifeboats' appeal.

And at a special ceremony at the Land's End Hotel, Richard was presented with a cheque for a further £1,500 in recognition of his achievement — the money will be added to that already presented to the Lifeboat charity.

He said: ' I was aware that we had been nominated for an award, but very surprised to hear we had been placed first in our category.

'I was delighted to receive the cheque on behalf of the Lifeboat Service and happy to pass it on via our local Callington and district branch.'

Richard, who is headmaster at Kelly College Junior School, was one of several deserving prize winners who were presented with a total of £10,000 by Heritage Great Britain after completing the 1,689 mile trip.

Participants in the trip were divided into different classes — those travelling on foot, by wheel or by motor.

A weird and wonderful variety of transportation was used, including a three-wheeled Indian taxi, Sentinal steam lorries — and a natural gas-powered motorised toilet!

Richard's car, a Ford Capri 2.8i, is currently on display in the Miles of Memory Museum at Land's End, but later this summer will be removed in order to prepare the car for another endurance run in aid of the RNLI.
