A DAZZLING display is guaranteed in Tavistock town centre tomorrow (Friday), as the Christmas lights and Tree of Light in Bedford Square are officially switched on.

The Tree, which stands 25ft tall in front of Tavistock Town Hall, enables people to remember a person or cause by sponsoring a light.

The project has been organised by the Lions Club of Tavistock and president of the group Roger Collins is due to perform the lighting ceremony at 7pm.

A short service will be led by the Vicar of Tavistock, Prebendary John Rawlings, the Methodist minister Rev Jeff Moles and Roman Catholic priest, Father Sunny Paul — with music provided by Stannary Brass.

Glyn John, Lions club spokesman, said he was 'delighted' by the response to the Tree of Light and hoped last year's figure of £1,600 would be topped.

Anyone who would like to sponsor a light can do so tomorrow night, when Lions members will be available with forms.

Forms are also available at the Times offices or by calling 01822 615131.

The deadline for sponsoring lights is December 14 — sponsors' names will be published in the Times.

All proceeds from the Tree of Light will be donated to Macmillan Nurses.

After the service, the mayor of Tavistock, Cllr Judith Williams, will switch on the Christmas lights.
