THE start sheet was completely full for the Captain's Day at Okehampton Golf Club on Saturday. A total of 150 members, with more on the waiting list, attended this annual fixture. The captain for 2008, Allen Deakin, had organised a lifeboat to be on display as this was his charity for the day. He also organised a refreshment caravan on the tenth tee, which was run by his daughter, Wendy, and which was much appreciated by the players. With the bottle on the bar being counted, and a draw with many prizes being donated he hopes to have raised in excess of £200 for the RNLI. The format for the day was an individual stableford, with prizes for the men, ladies and juniors. With nearest the pin on four holes, Fourth and 15th for the ladies and seventh and 14th for the men. Winning these were Mo Huggins and Trisha Nilsson for the ladies and Colin Cornwall and Malcolm Hooper for the men. The juniors played a nine-hole competition and some wonderful scores ensued. Jack Cornwall was third with 24 points, second was Kieran Mitchal, 25, and winning with a tremendous 26 points was Robert Wildash. Mo Huggins won the ladies' section with 38points, second was the lady captain Cherry James on countback from Shirley Stunnel, both scoring 37points. The men's competition was also very competitive and Ray Grey had to score 45 points to win the first prize. Second with 44 points was Phillip Hawking, third Bob Barrett 43 points, fourth Steve Hill 41 points on countback from Malcolm Hooper, Ron Uren, Colin Sturgess and Adam Cook. Ninth was Graham Starkey with 40 points on countback from J Lee. Wednesday's ladies competition was cancelled due to the monsoon weather, but on Monday the President's team played a tough match against Bigbury at home. Marcia Jones, Lin Atkinson and Jane Warren won. Marcia Guy and Cherry James halved and Penny Deakin and Lynn Hazelton (team captain) lost, giving Okehampton a narrow win of ten points to nine. The Sheelagh Creasy team were away at Stover on Friday. Maureen Willcocks and Janet Hatch won, which meant the match score was the complete opposite of the home match and they lost no ground in the race for the finals.
