Okehampton community group, All Together Okehampton, is asking other local organisations whether they would be interested in helping to set up a ’library of things’.

The proposed ’library’ would allow local community organisations to borrow items they use infrequently and save them the expense of purchasing equipment they do not often need.

Okehampton Community Garden’s chair Linda Harper who conceived of the idea, said: ’We had quite a few bits and pieces of equipment lying about which made us think we could let others use it.

’We want to find out if others are interested because then we can take it forward to funding organisations.’

The ’library’ is as yet hypothetical as Ms Harper explained she is doing ’market research’ at the moment to determine the level of approval for the idea.

So far the local girl guide and scout organisations have voiced their support and the idea has received positive comments from other members of the community.

Ms Harper is now asking interested community groups to email their thoughts and suggestions to her. Suggestions given so far include parachutes, glue guns and firepit cooking equipment.

Okehampton’s Community Garden is situated on the edge of Dartmoor and aims to bring the community together through a love of gardening and growing food.

The garden holds regular well-being sessions, social evenings, drumming circles and children’s activity sessions and event, and is also home to Okehampton’s Men in Sheds.

The community garden recently held a wassailing event run by community music group, Wren Music, which attracted about 60 people to the centre for a night of singing, celebration, campfires and soup.
