TAVISTOCK Library is holding a week-long festival to celebrates its first birthday at the Quay, and is inviting all its borrowers, both young and old, to get involved.

The third Tavistock Children's Book Festival includes author workshops with Paul Dowling, Shoo Rayner and Tim Bowler.

There will be activity-based workshops with Clive Pig and a Teddy Bear's picnic and storytime for playgroups.

All the first birthday events at the library take place between Monday, July 8, and Saturday, July 13.

The finale for the younger borrowers comes on Saturday with a puppet theatre show by Burglar Bill. Free tickets will be available from the library. There will also be a bear hunt and face painting, later in the afternoon.

Local artist Clare Brown will visit the library to help pupils from Tavistock Primary and St Rumon's schools to create a mosaic that will be based on the children's idea of what Tavistock means to them.

The finished mosaic will brighten up the walkway between the library and the footbridge over the canal to Meadowlands and the Wharf.

This initiative is supported both by the library and the Tamar Valley Project.

For older borrowers or those who have yet to discover the library there is a wine and cheese evening on Tuesday, June 9, sponsored by Safeway and held in the library from 6.30pm to 9pm. A special first anniversary birthday cake will also be provided by Christopher's Restaurant.

'The staff and I are so happy at the way the new library has been received by all the people of Tavistock,' said Moira Andrews, librarian-in-charge. 'We thought it would be a lovely way to say thank you to everyone who has supported us over the last year.'

All the weeks events, while supported by Devon Library and Information Services, have only been possible through the continued hard work of volunteer fund-raisers who have come up with many ideas, including guess the weight of the cake and name the teddy bear, said Mrs Andrews.
