AFTER a season of oh-so-near last year, Lewdown Cricket Club have begun their indoor nets at Parklands Leisure Centre, Okehampton, to get in shape for the summer. They will be starting on Sunday February 25 at 5pm, trying to shake the disappointment of not gaining promotion into the C division of the Devon League. Their First XI finished third in the D division west, with the Second XI side finishing second in the Tamar League. Both evening league sides finished second in their respective leagues and the youth sides all competed tremendously against strong opposition. Lewdown are looking to go one better this year, offering a good standard of qualified coaching both at the indoor nets and once the inclement weather clears at the Recreation Field, Lewdown. They will be looking to gain some quality experience from overseas again, while keenly following the progress of Kyle Abbott, their overseas player from last year as he strives to make his mark in the professional arena in the UK. With funding confirmed from the Lords Taverners and with kind donations from sponsors, the club can this year afford wheel away nets to allow training on the square, once again improving the already impressive cricketing landscape. Lewdown are an ambitious club, and with the shake up of the Devon League structure to come in next year, high league positioning is vital. There is an abundance of cricket this summer from the serious Saturday League stuff to Sunday friendlies, evening 20-20 and a host of youth matches at U11, U13 and U15 level, the future is indeed bright. If you would like to come along to nets this winter then contact either Charlie on 07747 841617 or Jack on 07816 978609, or turn up on the day. Indoor nets will continue on Sunday evenings throughout March and April, contact the numbers above for times.
