THE chamber of commerce in Tavistock is calling on businesses to make the town ?blooming lovely? this summer. The chamber wants 150 hanging baskets to go up around the town so that Tavistock can bloom with pride, and is putting £2,500 into the scheme to encourage shops and offices to take part. The baskets are environmentally friendly and low maintenance, and will only need watering twice a week. The plan is for them to be on display from mid-June until mid-September. Tavistock chamber will fund the £25 cost of the special brackets to support the hanging baskets. Businesses will pay £35 for the basket full of plants and £10 to have the bracket fixed. The work of preparing the baskets, putting them up and taking them down and fixing the brackets will be carried out by a specialist company, Plantscape. Nigel Eadie, of the Original Pasty House, who is the chamber treasurer, said: ?The chamber believes it is well worth the £2,500 to help make Tavistock a really wonderful floral town. ?We want to build on the town?s success in being named Best Food Town in the region, and the accolade of Britain?s favourite market town as well as having the best farmers? market in Devon. ?We really want to make Tavistock blooming lovely this summer to enhance the successes that the town has already had. ?For a small amount, businesses can transform Tavistock into an oasis of floral beauty which will make the town more attractive to visitors which will in turn benefit local businesses.? Anyone wanting more information should contact Mr Eadie or any chamber official.
