A SCHEME by Devon County Council to improve pedestrian safety in the Fairplace area of Okehampton will begin on Monday and take eight weeks to complete.

The work, which follows extensive public consultation, includes the introduction of courtesy crossings, improving street lighting and changes to the kerb lines.

It will form part of an overall enhancement scheme for the area including works to the Church forecourt, Fairplace Gardens and toilets and the Post Office forecourt.

Ideas for replacing the toilets in Fairplace and landscaping the gardens are currently being developed by West Devon Borough Council and will go on public view soon.

When the scheme is completed it is believed that it will bring a new fresh appearance to Fairplace and make it a safer and more pedestrian friendly place to be.
