PERMISSION has been granted for a spotlight above Angus McPhie's opticians in Okehampton to illuminate St James Chapel.

Planning officers of West Devon Borough Council said the proposal would be beneficial as it would create a focal point and add visual interest and light to the town during the hours of darkness.

They were of the opinion that the benefits of illuminating outweighed the impact caused by the appearance of the light unit above the fascia.

Information is awaited as to the hours of operation and means of control for the system.

The illumination of the chapel is all part of the enhancement of Okehampton Town Centre, which is the brainchild of local architect Peter Woodgate and a collaboration between the town, borough and county councils.
