MEMBERS of the Royal British Legion women's section Yelverton and Plymouth Drake branches are particularly pleased with their fundraising success over recent months.
The branches came together earlier in the year, having hit on the idea of running a stall selling innovative handicrafts, including novelty jewellery, cards, small gifts, bric-a-brac and other miscellaneous items at Tavistock Pannier Market on a Wednesday.
Yelverton branch secretary Maureen Wilkinson said: 'We had been thinking of new ideas to raise funds for the RBL women's section benevolent fund for some time, then together with members of Plymouth Drake branch, we had a "light bulb" moment, with the idea of running a stall at the market which has proved very popular with residents and visitors, raising in excess of £400.
'We are delighted with the support we have received and have got to the stage now where we would love new members to join to help us to contine and expand our fundraising efforts.'
Both branches are part of a 900-strong network offering friendship and the chance to enjoy a range of activites throughout the year, including social events, listening to talks and fundraising. Membership is open to all women with or without any military service connection but who support the aims of the organisation, which is to provide care and support to the families of serving and ex-service personnel.
Anyone wishing to find out more about membership of Yelverton branch, which meet on the second Thursday afternoon of each month at the Memorial Hall, Yelverton, can ring 01822 616009 or Plymouth Drake branch, which meets on the last Wednesday afternoon of each month at Plympton Library should ring 01752 701994.
