THE Bere Alston branch of the Royal British Legion would like to thank all of the people who live on the Bere Peninsula for their support and generosity with this year's Poppy Appeal.
We would like to thank all of you who attended the war memorial and church service in Bere Ferrers. The increase in numbers was significant. We would like to thank the 'Tavy Tars' for the rendition during church service.
The parade in Bere Alston was also very well attended. We would like to thank all the organisations, especially the youth organisations who marched so well. The parade this year was the largest we have had for a number of years. In Trinity Church I believe every seat was taken.
A lot of thanks must go to those behind the scenes for their support: the police for the traffic control; Mansbridge and Balment, M A Hull, Bere Peninsula Pharmacy, J A N Brown and Bere Ferrers Social Club for their sponsorship of the wreaths which were laid by all the youth organisations. We must not forget the lovely ladies who gave up their time to prepare and serve the refreshments.
We must also thank all those Poppy Appeal collectors. Each year these people go out in all kinds of weather to collect your donations. Most of these people have done this year in year out. Without them the Poppy Appeal would not be the success it is today. The total amount of money collected this year was £1,453.61.
A large number of people, including children from the playschool, attended the ceremony at the flagstaff to honour those who failed to come home from the war.
