EVEN as the financial climate worsens, Okehampton's generosity continues undiminished. Okehampton branch of the Royal British Legion is delighted to announce that for the 2007 Poppy Appeal Okehampton raised £11,383 — £2,000 more than in 2006. The branch expressed their warmest thanks to all who contributed, the volunteers and the wreath donations. The appeal closed on May, 31, 2008. Poppy Appeal organiser Val Hoar declared herself delighted with the result. With her husband, Terry, she feels privileged to be involved in the RBL's work and, as a welfare caseworker, she sees first-hand where the money goes to help serving and former service personnel and their dependants. Val said: 'Such support is invaluable. The RBL welcomes men and women of all ages to become members; there is no need to have served in the Armed Forces but in order to benefit from the legion's welfare services, you need to have served in the Armed Forces. 'With Okehampton expanding at an unprecedented rate I would be particularly pleased to hear from anyone who, during the period running up to Remembrance Sunday, can spare an hour or two to help with the appeal. 'It's a good way to get to know your new neighbours.' The legion's mission is to safeguard the welfare, interests and memory of those who are serving or who have served. It campaigns and lobbies on a wide range of issues, including mental and physical health, housing and homelessness, employment, community and adult care, disability, skills development and debt. Its aim is to continue to improve the welfare and support for veterans and their dependants. Poppy Funds can be provided in a temporary crisis, for example homelessness, assistance with loans for property repairs or starting small businesses. Val added: 'If you belong to an organisation that would like to learn more about the legion and its work, I'd be delighted to give a presentation at one of your meetings.'
