Former players for Bere Alston United FC took to the field on Sunday to play a ‘Legends’ charity match, raising money for a past player currently battling severe health issues.

Twenty six former local stars played for the ‘Hammond Cup’ in the game organised by Bere Alston Youth FC, followed by an auction at the Victoria Social Club.

The two sides were managed by former men’s team manager and club sponsor Karl Gatcum and youth team manager Adrian Spry.

Adrian’s team came out on top with a 3-1 victory thanks to goals from Nathan Harvey, James Easterbrook and a tap in from Will Westlake.

The highlight of the game was said to be Jeff Babbs’ run and ‘outrageous’ lobbed goal in the first half for Karl’s team.

Event organiser and youth team secretary Steve Daymond said: ‘We were blown away by the generosity of the players and supporters.

‘We’re an extremely charitable club and give back to the community through many ways, including Movember, Soccer Aid, toys for children in hospital at Christmas and the Ronald McDonald House charity.

‘When we heard of a local family, and a former Bere Alston player, that was going through extremely severe health issues, we wanted to try and do our part.

‘In total, we raised well over £1,000 and attracted the biggest crowd in recent memory to our fantastic pitch, facilities and village.

‘Special thanks to Will, Darren and the men’s team for getting the pitch looking brilliant and the Victoria Social Club for hosting our auction event.

‘This will now become an annual event so more charities can benefit from our club.’

The club committee expressed thanks to everyone for their support since setting up in the 2018/19 season. They said they never believed the club would become what it has so quickly and felt honoured to be able to give back to the community.
