AFTER two-and-a-half years Tavistock Town Council has finally got to court for the first stage of the long-drawn legal battle over repairs to its properties.

Two councillors were due to be seen by the arbitrator today (Thursday) in London.

Town clerk Roger Howard said: 'This is the first stage where the arbitrator is hearing on a point of law about the litigation.

'It's scheduled for three days — the first day the counsels on either side make their presentations, then he calls the witnesses.'

Col Howard said Cllrs Judith Williams and Norma Woodcock have been called to London, as they were involved in the original contract for repair work to properties owned by the council.

Col Howard said the case would be summed up tomorrow (Friday).

'We hope we will get a decision on this first stage point of law which will guide both sides as to what happens next,' he said.

'If we get through this one successfully then the next thing to get thrashed out is the financial settlement.'

But he warned although the hearing is scheduled for three days, the arbitrator could take longer in coming to a decision.
