EXPLORE with your children, discover with your parents and create with your grandparents as Family Learning Week hits Okehampton from October 7 to 15. Okehampton Primary School is hosting a day of fun events for children aged 5 to 16, and their families, on Saturday, October 7, to celebrate. Family Learning Week is a national campaign run by lifelong learning charity Campaign for Learning, to encourage more families to experience the rewards of learning together. With everything from circus skills and card making to morris dancing and African drumming on offer at the primary school, there is bound to be something for the whole family at the event run by Okehampton Family Learning Action Group. The aim is to show that learning is fun, takes place anywhere and can be enjoyed by everyone, whatever their age. Research shows that parents and carers are the most important factor in helping children do well at school, and Okehampton Family Learning Action Group hopes the event will reach out to families who may not have taken part in learning activities in the past. Susie Hewitt, Okehampton librarian and secretary of the group said: ?Families are our first and most important teachers, and parental involvement is vital if children are to get the best from their education. ?Family Learning Week in Okehampton is a chance for parents and carers to get a taste of family learning and gain the confidence they need to continue supporting their family?s learning at home.? The event is sponsored by Okehampton Educational Foundation, the Rotary Club of Okehampton, Okehampton and District LIons and the EX20 Lottery. Mrs Hewitt said organisers were grateful to all their sponsors without whose support they would not be able to run the event.
