MAP reading, navigation, stretcher carrying and search techniques are among some of the activities on offer at the Moor Fun Day at Harrowbeer Airfield in July.
The Rotary Club of Plympton and Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team have joined forces to organise the event.
Participants can spend the day in the company of members of the rescue team, learning some of their skills and getting the chance to put them into practice in a light-hearted competitive context.
Participants in groups of four to eight, will try their hand at line throwing, navigation and erecting large tents among many other activities.
The emphasis will be very much on team building and fun with lots of laughs at each others expense but with a serious purpose.
But by the end of the day everyone will be better equipped to use the moor for their pleasure and have a good grasp of the work the rescue team undertakes.
Mike Uglow from Plympton Rotary Club said: 'Because it's a fun event, stamina and strength won't be needed — just a sense of humour and a willingness to get stuck in.
'As the strap-line to the event says "learn a little, laugh a lot" and in doing so help some great causes.'
The event will take place on Saturday, July 7 and is open to anyone over the age of 18. The event costs £20 to take part, which includes lunch and well earned tea and cakes at the end. Anyone who makes it to the end of the day will also be entered in a free draw.
All the profits will be divided between the search and rescue team, ShelterBox and other local Rotary charities.
Spectators are welcome to watch the action as well as get to know the rescue team's search dogs and take a look at control vehicles.
Anyone interested in taking part, either as an individual entry or as part of a group can contact the Rotary Club by emailing [email protected]">[email protected]
