Okehampton Golf Club geared up for the season last week as Saturday's Fourball Stableford for the Winter Trophy was fully subscribed and the Captains' Shotgun, followed by the Captains' Drive- In on Sunday, was also well supported. The competition was fierce with a lot of the prizes being decided on countback. The winners of the Winter trophy were Graham Mitchell and Rob Reddington who won division two, on the back three from Martin O'Connor and Lee Pengelly from division one, with 47 points. Second in division two were Ricky Lee and Ron Iles with 43 and third Brian Willcocks and Den Jenkins who had 42. Division one was won by Martin O'Connor by Lee Pengelly on 47pts, second Martin Cox and Harry Hawking, 44, on the back nine from Graham Moysey and Malcolm Hooper. Sunday was a real success with the rain staying away until after the Shotgun — a three ball best two ball Stableford, and the incoming Captains' drive in had finished. Barry Hodges, Dave Warren and Paula O'Neill won with an excellent 84pts; second were Matt Milford, Russell Dibble and Lin Atkinson with 79 while third were Malcolm Hooper, Gerald Nilsson and Penny Deakin. The Drive In is traditionally made with an old hickory driver and Allen and Cherry both managed this, but unfortunately when the incoming junior captain, Lawrence Waldron, went to make his drive, with his practice swing, he generated such speed that the head of the old driver came off! He was allowed to drive with his own five iron, which he successfully did. Last Wednesday the ladies played a drawn foursomes for the Rees Baker Bowl. The convincing winners were Lin Atkinson and Mary Keir with 39 pts, in second place were Kath Mansell and Val Steer with 35 while Cherry James and Lorna McCurrach were third on 32.
