The Lawns Care Home in Plymouth Road, Tavistock celebrated the Queen’s 90th birthday (see picture below) with a garden party in its grounds last Thursday (April 21).

Everyone who attended was treated to home cooked cakes, fancies, cream teas, and all the usual fineries, including of course cucumber sandwiches with one’s crusts cut orf!

The event was attended by the Rev Dr Christopher Hardwick and curate Rev Dr Steven Martin, as well as a surprise visit from David and Rosemary Turner, Tavistock town crier and his consort, who gave a Royal cry.

Many of the ladies were very elegant in their summer dresses and hats, and even some of the men had got their suits out of mothballs!

Two previous coffee mornings at The Lawns have raised monies for charities.  This event raised £400 for the residents’ social fund.  The ‘Bake Off’ by staff which helped provide many of the cakes for the party was won by Gina Jackson with her chocolate fudge cake, with Mary Walke’s orange cake and Tanya Lashbrook’s carrot cake second and third respectively.
