A BUCKLAND Monachorum teenager was among 800 young achievers who attended St James? Palace on Friday to be presented with their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Awards at a ceremony attended by Prince Philip.

Each recipient gained their award by undertaking activities over an 18 month period in the four sections ? service, expeditions, skills and physical recreation and they also completed a residential project.

Laura Young worked as a mealtime assistant at a local nursing home, she took part in expeditions in Loch Lomond and the Trossachs in Scotland, her skill was playing the flute and her recreational activity was badminton.

A children?s holiday camp in Dorset was where Laura did her residential project.

The 18-year-old achieved her award through the West Devon Open Group in Tavistock.

She is now studying a degree in nursing at the University of Southampton.
