THREE youngsters from West Devon have raised a magnificent £124 for flood victims in Mozambique.

Laura Eastel, of Horrabridge, was spurred into action when she watched the television news last month.

'I felt really sorry for these people as all their houses had been washed away and they had lost all their belongings,' said eleven-year-old Laura.

'I spoke to my mum about doing a sponsored walk — I kept on until she agreed, so we decided to walk from Horrabridge to Meavy and back to Horrabridge via Yelverton.'

She was joined by her friend, Sarah Maddock, aged ten, young brother nine-year-old Christopher and her mum on the walk which included a stop for a quick drink and rest at Laura's grandmother's house in Meavy.

'Because it was just the three of us we didn't expect to raise much money but what we did raise would help these people a little — we couldn't believe it when we counted it all up and we had raised £124,' said Laura.

Jenny Eastel, Laura's mum, said she was very proud of the youngsters' efforts.

'It was just something she did off her own bat — I tried to get her to do something easier but she decided she really wanted to go ahead with it.

'We think it was about three-and-a-half miles but it felt nearer four!' she said.

The walkers thank all those who sponsored them so generously.
