East Cornwall division one Tavistock seconds 1 St Newlyn East 0 WITH five weeks without a game and playing against a fit St Newlyn East side Tavistock knew they had to up their game. It was a different Tavistock line up with Chris Short playing at centre half, John Hadjiani on the right wing and new signing Wayne Crow on the left. The game started scrappily for the Lambs, with four chances being made which led to pot shots from strikers Cowling and A McPherson. The Saints looked a different team from their last meeting and were creating chances. The quality of Tavistock's back four and great cool safe hands from keeper Rowe kept it to 0-0 at half-time. A good team talk and swapping Cowling and Hadjiani to get width and pace seemed to work; with great battling in midfield from Luke McPherson Tavistock were pushing for that elusive goal. The Saints thought the same, especially when their player seemed to be brought down in the box, but a great tackle from left back Mellor defused the threat. Five minutes later a scramble in the Saints' box with the keeper grounded saw the ball falling to McPherson, who hit the post. This appeared not to be Tavistock's day, but in the 88th minute Hadjiani was brought down in the box. Paul Cowling stepped up to smash the ball in the net and put Tavistock five points clear of the pack. l Next week Tavistock are away to LIfton, 2.30 kick-off.
