TAVISTOCK Cricket Club season comes to an end with President?s Day. Tavistock president Stuart Monday lost the toss and his side were put into bat. Robert Jarman and Cornwall?s Ben Smeeth put on 118 for the second wicket. Both showed a good range of shots before being asked to retire on reaching 50. Alex Smeeth, younger brother of Ben and also a Cornish county player, and Hatherleigh?s 15 year old Devon Under 16 player Gareth Tidball joined each other at the crease and put on 43 for the third wicket. Both batted well until being out. Devon golfer Adam Bridgewater then proceeded to take charge and was eventually out on 27.They finished their 45 overs with 213. In reply Tavistock quickly lost Mark Webber and good early bowling from Cherry and Thomas kept runs at a premium. The Smeeth brothers joined the attack and quickly put the seal on things, bowling 18 overs between them for a miserly 17 runs. The game was now lost for Tavistock, but there was still the question of Munday being able to get the 10 wickets for a proper victory. Fifteen year old James McGahey had the opportunity to bowl against father John, finishing with 1-5 off three overs. Unfortunately not the wicket of Dad, who was later run out for 17 by Andy Gauler, whose record of run out situations makes him an international. The final overs of the day saw a stand of 40 by opening bowler Lee Baker and James Kaminski. The last over, bowled by Gareth Tidball, claimed the wicket of Baker, which brought to an end a disappointing season which saw the 1st XI relegated from the Premier League, and the 2nd XI missing promotion by four points. The officials of the club would like to htnak all the businesses and vice presidents and helpers who have done such a tremendous bob with their support and help behind the scenes.
