FOLLOWING an overwhelming response, tomorrow (Friday) is the last day of Tavistock Post Office?s collection of items for the troops in the Gulf.

Goods such as toiletries, biscuits, sweets, coffee and Cup-a-soups have been flooding in and staff have now filled around 50 shoe-boxes which will be sent to British soldiers in Iraq.

A box has been in place at the Post Office for customers to donate items since staff member Mary Matthews saw an appeal on television and decided to support the idea at work.

Mary said: ?I?ve been absolutely staggered by the response and we would like to thank everyone who has given so generously.?

l The Army is urging people to show their support for servicemen and women in the Gulf by sending an e-mail or donating to a service fund, instead of collecting items to send out.

The military supply system is already over stretched, and the only way to send out parcels to the Gulf at present is via the British Forces Post Office system, to a named soldier. The limit per package is 2kg and costs £6.89.
