REFERRING to your recent published Letter, I am so glad that others feel strongly about the unnecessary early cutting of wild flower verges.
I have questioned the council about this before, but it is worse this year owing to the late onset of spring, resulting in many flowers being cut in May when they were just coming into bloom.
A spokesperson from the Devon Wildlife Trust, who I contacted, suggested that concerned people could write individually to the county council.
He also suggested writing again just before next year's cutting season.
While some cutting may be needed for safety reasons, I feel that most straight roads and lanes should not be cut until at least the traditional hay cutting time or even in early autumn.
The rural lanes are a last refuge for once common Lay Meadow plants and should be treated sympathetically.
