EDF Cup Teignmouth 18 Tavistock 24 TAVISTOCK opened their competitive season with this EDF Cup match at Teignmouth on Saturday and by a quirk in the fixture list they will be visiting the same ground in the league in two weeks? time. Tavistock started slowly and were eight points down at the end of the first quarter, having conceded a penalty goal converted via the cross bar by Ivan Pitman and a try scored for Teignmouth by their full back Matt Moses. Tavistock gradually started to exert themselves and as flankers Matt Cole and Duncan Law started dominating the loose ball the rest of the Tavy side started putting pressure on the Teignmouth defence. Tavistock?s first point came after a period of intense forward pressure when prop Craig Moore, a summer signing from Launceston, was driven over the line in the middle of a maul. Tavistock took the lead four minutes before half time with a second try. After forcing Teignmouth to concede a five metre scrum Matt Cole linked with Jake Phillips to allow the new Tavistock skipper to cross close to the posts. Alex Moy converted to give Tavistock a 12-8 half time lead. The second half started badly for Tavistock as they allowed Teignmouth to regain the lead with a try from left winger Eddie Wander, which Pitman converted. Again the Tavistock pack regained control and after putting on the pressure Teignmouth found themselves reduced to 14 men when scrum half Steffan Walker was sent to the sin bin as Teignmouth were penalised for continually infringing around the break down area. During this time Tavistock retook the lead with a try from Duncan Law converted by Alex Moy. Tavistock secured the game on the hour mark with the best try of the game. After winning the ball in midfield brothers Josh and Ben Sutton combined with Doug Lloyd to make space on the left for winger Joe Lane to score in the corner to put Tavistock 24-15 in front. Teignmouth rallied in the final ten minutes but a penalty goal from Dan Force was their only reward. l This weekend sees Tavistock entertain local rivals Okehampton at Sandy Park in the first Cornwall and Devon league game of the season, kick off 3pm.
