A PIECE of land in Tavistock owned by Plymouth Community Health Trust is to be sold for housing.

The three-quarter acre plot of land at Mount Ford, behind Tavistock Hospital, was bought by the Trust four or five years ago and has not been used since then.

Jim Tyler, deputy finance director, said: 'The intention was that we would use it for car parking for the hospital, but we had discussions with the highways authority and we decided it was not going to be practical given the volume of traffic.'

He said an application for planning permission on land was submitted to West Devon Borough Council last week.

'We are looking for planning approval for the erection of one dwelling and if that is given, we will market the site.

'The sale proceeds will go back into provision of health services in the Tavistock area,' said Mr Tyler.

The Trust has contacted residents in the area to let them know of its intentions.
