F A Vase 1st Round Tavistock 3 Penryn Athletic 0 IT was expected to be an even tussle between the two sides with similar results in the League. Tavistock?s Mark Conday shot straight at keeper Andy Avery after just two minutes. The Lambs were guilty of giving the ball away too easily in the first quarter. Penryn did not capitalise on this as they had good opportunities to open the scoring after 20 minutes with Matt Drummond and James Miller going wide and over. They both combined five minutes later with Miller swinging in a cross for Drummond to blast over. These missed chances were to cost them dearly when two minutes later the Lambs went into the lead with a well taken goal. The ball was laid up to Conday?s feet out on the edge of the area to lay the ball across goal. John Hadjiyianni allowed it to run to Will Stringer and some great footwork left a defender dead for him to shoot across goal and into the far corner. A Tavistock corner from John Gosling on the half hour saw Mike Arscott volley over from close range and then the referee decided it was his turn to perform with three bookings in as many minutes for the Lambs with Stringer, Gosling, and John Morris going onto his Christmas list. The second half saw the Lambs facing a very difficult strong wind but it did not deter them as they put distance between their opponents with a vital second goal. Arscott?s free kick on the half way line was helped on by Glynn Hobbs into the path of Conday who made no mistake firing wide of Avery. A Sean Cann mistake on 55 minutes let in Miller on goal but Andy Meeds did well to save. Conday had a good chance on the hour to race a way but he was forced a little wide and Avery did well to stop his shot. The game was sown up as a contest with 15 minutes remaining. Gosling?s tackle on the half way line saw the ball go up to the wing with Conday onto it to cross for Hobbs to control it in front of goal and blast it in from close range. Gosling, Stringer and Morris were then substituted by Dave Hallett, Shane Krac and Chris Menhinick for the Lambs to play out the game with some delightful possessional football to secure their place in the second round to be played on Saturday November 19.
