Pertemps Devon Premier Cup quarter-final

Tavistock 2

Ottery St Mary 1

THE Lambs kept the Jewson South Western League flag flying in this cup tie edging out the Devon League side.

Tavistock welcomed back Lee Cansfield and Andy Wright to the starting line up at the expense of John Gosling on holiday and Tony Cusack who was on the subs bench.

Both sides created openings in the first ten minutes with the visitors hitting the side netting and Cansfield's cross cut out by the keeper. A defence-splitting pass let in Alex Mckie for the visitors but Andy Meeds saved his low drive.

The Lambs then started playing the more controlled football with Dean Tongue causing problems down the right flank. Chris Gott forced a corner and from it the Lambs took the lead on 24 minutes. Wright's corner was glanced on at the near post by Darren Babb and Otters defender Chris Ormond only succeeded to steer it past his own keeper.

The visitors came back at the Lambs around the 40-minute mark with the home side conceding a succession of free kicks around their area but all were dealt with by a resolute Lambs defence.

Meeds dealt with an early goalmouth scramble at the start of the second half before the Lambs took command with a second goal on 55 minutes.

Mark Wall's centre from the edge of the area was handled by Ben Williamson to prevent Cansfield a good scoring chance.

The Lambs had missed three penalties this season but up stepped Cansfield to make no mistake with a hard low drive to give Neil Montandon no chance.

The Otters pushed for their opener in the last 15 minutes but it was not until the 87th minute before they finally broke through. A ball over the top of the defence had Meeds rushing out to clear but Miles Peggely got the touch to it to send it over the keeper's head for it to roll into an empty net.

The Lambs held firm for the remaining minutes to send them into the semi-finals for the first time since 1994. They meet Newton Abbott at Dawlish on Saturday February 10.

Sponsors Pertemps made this their match of the day and Tavistock defender Darren Babb was made man of the match and received a bottle of champagne.
