Jewson South Western League
Newquay 0
Tavistock 1
TAVISTOCK were back to winning ways with this narrow victory over the Peppermints.
The Lambs, facing a strong wind in the first half, were soon on the attack. Pete Tiffney shot wide after Marcus Crocker put him through. Newquay's keeper Dave Wilton did well to get a hand to a Lee Beer shot to prevent it going towards goal then tipped over an Andy Parnowski effort.
Tavistock continued to dominate for the rest of the half with Tiffney going close again and Darren Babb having a header cleared off the line. Newquay were reduced to long range efforts that gave Andy Meeds in the Lambs goal no trouble. But they almost took the lead against the run of play. A fine solo run by Wayne Gredziak into the penalty area saw his shot stopped by the legs of Meeds.
Tavistock started the second half in command as Tiffney had two good chances but each time shot over the crossbar.
Babb came to the rescue for the Lambs when he cleared away a free kick from inside the area before Tiffney made amends for his earlier misses. Beer won the ball in midfield and laid it back to Parnowski. His long through-ball over the top of the defence sent the striker away. Despite Wilton getting a hand to the ball it sailed into the net via the upright.
The home side tried to get the equaliser and the Lambs were caught napping as Gredziak's shot went over the bar after a quickly taken free kick.
Tavistock had further chances to wrap the game up near the end. Crocker's challenge with Wilton saw the ball break loose but it forced the ex-Plymouth Argyle and Dorchester striker wide.
A good result and it keeps the Lambs in sixth position in the league
