THERE was entertaining and exciting football on Saturday as the eighth annual six-a-side tournament took place at Fillace Park Horrabridge with Lakeside I emerging as champions. For the first time, 28 teams took part, including sides from Yelverton, Horrabridge, Mary Tavy, Luxton Building Company, Union Inn, Grub Up, and Lankeys Electrical. Four groups of seven competed against each other with the top two in each group contesting the Champions Cup and third and fourth place contesting the Supplementary Cup. This year saw a high standard from all teams and this was reflected in the closeness of most of the group matches. Yelverton, LBC, Horrabridge I, and Union Inn all topped their groups to enter the Champions Cup. Union Inn went out in the quarter-finals as did Yelverton to eventual winners Lakeside I who went on to beat LBC in the semis. Reigning champions Horrabridge I exited after a penalty shootout with losing finalists ?Dudes? In the Supplementary Cup,?Grub Up? defeated Yealm in the quarter-finals before losing to eventual winners Falcon III in a penalty shoot out in the semis. Horrabrdge expressed thanks to the following for sponsoring the tournament and donating draw prizes: Brandon Hire, Jewsons, and Ayres Sports of Tavistock, Bidders the Butchers of Yelverton, Toshiba UK, P&O Ferries, Elfordleigh Hotel and Pepper Communications.
